Cliff Lee has made a habit of beating the New York Yankees. Seattle’s ace gets a second chance to do so in just over a week when the Mariners attempt to halt the Yankees’ six-game winning streak Friday night. Lee is 7-2 with a 3.27 ERA in his last nine starts against the Yankees, including Philadelphia’s only two victories in last year’s World Series. The left-hander continued that success June 29, throwing an eight-hitter in a 7-4 victory at Yankee Stadium. It was the third consecutive complete game from Lee, who has won four starts in a row while posting a 1.29 ERA.

He extended his winning streak Sunday, allowing one run and striking out 11 in eight innings to defeat Detroit 8-1 on the road. The Mariners haven’t won since, losing four in a row after falling 3-1 in the opener of this four-game set Thursday. They may be in for a more significant loss with Lee’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, possibly making him a candidate to be dealt prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Yankees might be a potential suitor for the two-time All-Star.

Lee, the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner with Cleveland, might be more concerned with ending New York’s season high-tying win streak. The Yankees have also won a season-best five in a row on the road and lead the AL East by two games over Tampa Bay. They’ll again counter Lee with Phil Hughes, one of eight Yankees named to Tuesday’s All-Star game. Hughes, one of three members of the rotation with at least 10 victories, didn’t fare well opposite Lee on June 29, surrendering seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings. His next start was also a struggle, as he gave up five runs while serving up three homers in six innings of a 7-6, 10-inning win over Toronto on Sunday.

A start on the road could help Hughes, as he is 4-1 with a 2.56 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 38 2-3 innings over six outings. Nick Swisher is looking to continue his hot hitting a day after becoming the last Yankee named to the All-Star game by winning a final fan vote. The right fielder is hitting .425 with three homers over the last 10 games and backed up his first All-Star nod by collecting four hits Thursday. Swisher homered twice off Lee in last month’s meeting.

Florida Marlins were disappointed by the way they have begun a series of the last before the All-Star break, but they have good reason to believe can be recovered by Ricky Nolasco is the mound. Nolasco goes for his fourth straight victory when the Marlins continue a road to four game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. Florida fell 10 games behind first place NL East Atlanta after suffering a 10-4 loss to Arizona on Thursday.

The defeat dropped the Marlins to 5-5 during a stretch of 13 straight games outside of Florida, which they opened by winning two of three against the New York Mets in Puerto Rico - contests officially considered home games for the Marlins. Florida had three errors Thursday and gave up a double-digit run total for the fourth time this year – one night after shutting out the Los Angeles Dodgers.

While the Marlins have been inconsistent recently, Nolasco certainly hasn’t, winning his last three starts including one in Puerto Rico and a victory in Atlanta on Sunday. He gave up two runs and struck out a season-high 11 in the 3-2 win over the Braves. A fourth straight win would tie the longest streak of the right-hander’s career – set last season.

Nolasco is 5-1 with a 3.53 ERA in five starts against Arizona. He’ll need to be wary of shortstop Stephen Drew, who is 8 for 16 with three homers and two doubled against him. Nolasco will seek to hand the Diamondbacks their sixth loss in seven games after Arizona snapped a five-game losing streak Thursday. The Diamondbacks were outscored 40-13 during their slide, but matched a season high with 15 hits – four apiece by Kelly Johnson and Geraldo Parra - in the series opener.

Phillies What Goes Wrong?

Honestly, Cole Hamels(notes) seems to have no idea why he pitches the way he pitches now.

It’s his arm, or it’s not. It’s his mechanics, or it’s not. It’s his command or his choices or the hitters or the workload or the decisions he made last offseason. Or it’s not.

Hamels goes through them all, runs them through his head, sleeps on them, ices an elbow that was sore in spring, and then goes out and gives up four runs in 5 1/3 innings. He throws harder, then softer, then smarter and he’s sure he’s gaining on it, and then he looks around to find runners on base.

He hates it, of course. He didn’t come here to be average, even below average, to be the guy they give the ball to and then have everybody take two steps back to cover the gaps. He came here to throw 260 innings and win 18 games and be the World Series MVP, which pretty much describes April through October 2008.

But this, now this is unacceptable. He’s losing more than he’s winning. His ERA is near 4½. His velocity isn’t good, which is a little alarming, though it’s not horrible, either. Hitters sometimes seem to be on everything, though. In about 34 fewer regular-season innings than last year, he gave up 13 more hits. In 35 playoff innings last year he gave up two home runs. This year, in 14 2/3? Six, including three to left-handed hitters.

On the eve of Hamels’ Game 3 start against the Yankees at Citizens Bank Park, his manager, Charlie Manuel, said, “Every time he goes out and pitches it’s an adventure.” He also said he trusts him and that he expects him to throw a good game. Still, an adventure.

Baseball managers generally aren’t keen on adventures, particularly not in the final days of October. It is why Pedro Martinez– and not Hamels – was assigned Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. And it’s why Joe Blanton– and not Cliff Lee– will get Game 4, because Lee never has in the big leagues pitched on three days’ rest and now is not the time to find out if he can, especially if he’s not begging for the ball.

Fall Classic baseball betting gets underway Wednesday night when the defending World Series champs, the Philadelphia Phillies, head to the Bronx to face the American League winning New York Yankees in Game 1.

The BetUS oddsmakers have tagged the Yankees as -170 home favorites for the opener, but baseball bettors have more than just single-game moneylines or totals wagers to choose from. The World Series offers a ton of prop and alternative bets, which you would expect from an event this size.

Former teammates Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia take the mound for their respective clubs in Game 1. Both pitchers have been stellar this postseason. Lee is 2-0 in three starts with an 0.74 ERA, while Sabathia has won all three of his playoff appearances and has a 1.19 ERA this October.

There are odds on whether either pitcher will give up a home run, and odds for their total number of strikeouts on Wednesday night. Sabathia has an over/under of 6.5 strikeouts for Game 1. He sat down just five batters in his most recent start but ranked seventh in total strikeouts this season and has 20 Ks in his three postseason starts.

Lee is looking at a strikeout total of 4.5. The crafty lefthander is coming off a 10-strikeout performance against the Los Angeles Dodgers and also has 20 Ks in October. Since joining the Phillies at the trade deadline Lee has 74 strikeouts in 12 starts for more than six Ks per game. He faced the Yankees twice this season, both times as a member of the Cleveland Indians, and totaled nine strikeouts in those starts.

On the other side of the plate, both teams have been fueled by their star players. Philadelphia is riding the red-hot bat of first baseman Ryan Howard, who is hitting .355 this postseason. He’s had seven extra-base hits and 12 RBI in nine games but has only hit two home runs. The oddsmakers have priced Howard hitting a home run in Game 1 of the World Series at +300. He’s totaled 45 dingers on the season but went without a big fly in the series win over Colorado and hasn’t gone yard since Game 4 against Los Angeles.

The Yankees are getting inspired play from third baseman Alex Rodriguez. He’s put his October slump in the past and is leading New York with a .438 batting average. A-Rod has found the outfield bleachers five times this postseason, including hitting home runs in three straight games against the Los Angeles Angels. He hasn’t gone yard in the last two games but hit 18 of his total 30 dingers inside Yankee Stadium this season. BetUS has priced A-Rod hitting a home run in Game 1 at +250.

Baseball bettors can also wager on player matchups, betting on which player will have the most total bases in Game 1. The BetUS oddsmakers have paired Phillies second baseman Chase Utley (+120) with Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter (-150) in the most intriguing matchup.

Jeter has compiled 22 bases in the playoffs, with 13 of those coming against the Angels in the ALCS. Utley has totaled 13 bases in the postseason but only had four of those versus the Dodgers in the NLCS. In the regular season, Utley had 290 total bases while Jeter managed 295.

MLB Betting News – After Lee Phillies’ rotation unsettled

The only certainty in the Phillies’ rotation is that Cliff Lee will pitch Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday. Everything else remains to be seen.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said before a team workout on Friday at Citizens Bank Park that he, pitching coach Rich Dubee, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and others will discuss their rotation and 25-man roster in meetings over the weekend. He said on Sunday they were still talking.

But he also announced that Lee would start Game 1 on Wednesday against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, although he would not commit to left-hander Cole Hamels in Game 2. Manuel could be tipping his hand there. He might want to start right-hander Pedro Martinez in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. Martinez certainly has experience there.

In a perfect world, Hamels gets the call, but he is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three postseason starts. He has allowed 20 hits, 11 runs, two walks and six home runs in 14 1/3 innings. He has struck out 12, and opponents have hit .328 against him.

“I look at Hamels, and I still feel like he’s got the game in him,” Manuel said. “Baseball is a funny game. I say that all the time. He’s very capable of throwing a good game. He was getting hit around a little bit the other night and he didn’t have the command that he usually has, but at the same time, he’s the guy. He’s very capable of throwing a shutout every time he goes out there.”

Hamels is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.

“Cole’s got to step back and just understand it’s about making pitches,” Dubee said after the Phillies clinched the National League Championship Series on Wednesday. “I think he’s put a lot of pressure on himself. He’s getting caught up in more emotions than focusing on what he needs to do.”

Lee has never pitched on short rest in his career, but that could happen depending how the World Series unfolds.

If the Phillies win their first couple of games, it seems less likely they bring Lee back on short rest — something Lee has never tried before. If Philadelphia drops its first couple of games, it might try to run Lee out there as much as possible.

They can blame it on a night better suited for ice fishing than playing baseball. It’s never a good sign when your shortstop is wearing a ski mask.

They can blame it on Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia(notes), the biggest man in most any company he chooses, and whose stature is growing exponentially now that he struts upon a stage grand enough to accommodate him.

But most of all, the Los Angeles Angels can blame only themselves, on a cold night that defied earlier forecasts and stayed dry, but instead rained all manner of Angel misadventures in a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday in Game 1 of the ALCS.

The Yankees profited from the pratfalls of a team with a hard-earned reputation of minimizing mistakes, which also was the formula New York used in the first round against the Minnesota Twins, another team presumably sound of mind and body that kept walking face-first into walls.

“We haven’t seen our guys crack the door open for a team like we did tonight in a long time,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after a game in which the Angels made three errors and shortstop Erick Aybar(notes) and third baseman Chone Figgins(notes) permitted a first-inning infield popup to fall untouched between them, allowing a run to score.

Angels starter John Lackey(notes), who already had watched left fielder Juan Rivera’s(notes) misguided throw allow Johnny Damon(notes) to take an extra base on his opposite-field single, thought he was headed back to the dugout having allowed just one run when Hideki Matsui(notes) lifted a routine fly to the left side. Figgins camped under it. So did Aybar, standing just a few feet away. Aybar took his eyes off the ball and glanced at Figgins, who by then had assumed the shortstop was going to take it. The ball practically landed at Aybar’s feet.

The Yankees have the best starting pitcher of the series in CC Sabathia, who is 12-2 since the All-Star Break. After Sabathia, the Yankees have only two reliable starters, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte.

Rather than using Joba Chamberlain or Chad Gaudin as a fourth starter, New York is reportedly considering using Sabathia for Game 4 and, if necessary, Game 7. Sabathia was roughed up in two regular-season meetings with the Angels, however, going 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA.

The Angels have four solid starters in John Lackey, Jered Weaver, Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders. Kazmir, who owns a 2.67 ERA against the Yankees in his career, could be key in shutting down the left-handed power bats of the Yankees.

While L.A. has the advantage in starting pitching, New York gets the nod in the bullpen. Yankees relievers had the 14th-best ERA in baseball during the regular season, while the Angels ranked 23rd. LA closer Brian Fuentes saved two games against Boston last round, but he’s nowhere near as automatic as the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera.

Twins vs. Yankees MLB Playoffs ALDS Game 2

The Minnesota Twins (87-77 SU, 82-82 RL, 73-80-11 O/U) are arguably the scrappiest team in all of baseball and fight to the very end, no matter who they’re playing.

Having said that, they will be in an uphill battle to beat the New York Yankees (104-59 SU, 89-74 RL, 77-78-8 O/U) in Game 2 of their ALDS showdown when they battle at Yankee Stadium tonight at 6 PM ET.

CC Sabathia struck out eight batters in 6.2 innings to help the Yankees defeat the Twins 6-2 in Game 1 on Wednesday.

New York cashed in for BetUS MLB betting members as -360 home favorites while the game’s eight combined runs played Under the 9.5-run O/U total.

Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui belted two-run homers while Alex Rodriguez added two RBI’s to lead the Yankees to victory.

The Twins will give the ball to red-hot right-hander Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.03 ERA) in this one while the Yankees counter with right-hander A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04 ERA).
